Both main characters are dealing with consequences of their past and it’s not easy to read how they deal with that sometimes. Well, this was a crazy roller coaster! While I felt Love Next Door was a bit less dramatic, I can assure now that Love on the Lake gets you right in the chest with a whole array of feels. The kind of murky shadows that might match mine. Because I feel like behind all that sunshine is some darkness. One I sincerely want to get to know better. Under the metallic-pink ridiculousness and that bright, sunshine smile and her bubbly personality is a layered and complex human being. But what happens when secrets get in the way of their happiness? A back and forth starts between these two until they finally act on their feelings. Enter Aaron Saunders, an apparent playboy who lives a very mysterious life and he is not liking what Teagan is making him feel. So, Love on the Lake is the second installment in this series and it focuses on Teagan Firestone’s story after she decides to make some changes in her life and start a new one in Pearl Lake with her brother and her new fiancée (who we all remember from the previous book in the series). So yeah, this is not the easiest book to read at times, but the happy ending is totally worth it! Aaron and Teagan still gave the best of what a small-town romance is, but they also show us the consequences of dealing with loss and how that affects their relationship. Helena deepens into these complex characters and their brokenness as years pass. As much as I enjoyed the first installment, I have to say this one is even better. Small-town romance is one of my top favorites to read and Helena Hunting is doing a great job with her Lakeside series.
